HSBC Credit Cards Connect Daily Spend to Global Rewards

HSBC’s global story began with Scottish businessman Thomas Sutherland, who pushed for a bank to finance trade between Asia and the West. In 1865, that idea became HSBC in Hong Kong. HSBC entered India by opening its first bank in Calcutta in 1867. In its early days, it focused on handling foreign exchange. HSBC’s story in India did not start with HSBC alone. Its origin dates back to 1853, when the Mercantile Bank was acquired by HSBC in 1959. That cross-border history still shapes how HSBC credit cards deliver value today.

For instance, the HSBC Live+ Credit Card offers 10% cashback on dining, groceries, purchases, utilities, and food delivery. You can earn up to ₹1,200 in cashback by spending ₹12,000 in a month across the following categories. But when mobility is key, HSBC goes another way. Reward Points can be carried over to 15 airline and 5 hotel partners. These cover airlines like Air India and Singapore Airlines, and Accor and Marriott Bonvoy among the hotels. With HSBC, don't assume that paying more will earn you more rewards. It typically refers to different types of value.

Higher Fees Don't Mean Better Credit Card Value

A higher membership fee does not automatically mean better HSBC credit card benefits. It changes the way the card returns value. Check the table below to see which HSBC card gives you enough real value to justify its fee.

Not Every Purchase Earns HSBC's Top Rate

But if you're looking for a credit card, you'd need to consider the annual cost, which is half of the amount mentioned above. HSBC's waiver threshold shows you exactly what you must do to keep the card.

The percentage of that value you're able to retain depends on the caps and fee-waiver objectives, as well as spending limits. The differences below decide whether an HSBC card rewards your spending naturally or makes you chase the value.

  • Not Every Card Swipe Gets the Headline Rate: The HSBC Live+ Credit Card works best for dining, food delivery, groceries, shopping, and utilities. Then, its 10% cashback is most effective if you regularly spend in those accelerated categories.

  • One Card Two Finish Lines: The HSBC TravelOne Credit Card waives its ₹4,999 annual fee after a yearly spend of ₹8 lakh or more. Then, if you spend more than ₹12 lakh, you get 10,000 bonus reward points. So, paying just the annual membership fee does not automatically unlock milestone rewards or bonuses.

  • Spending More Won’t Save the Fee: The HSBC Premier Credit Card carries a ₹20,000 annual fee, but if you qualify as a premium customer, you get a waiver. That means the waiver depends on maintaining Premier eligibility, not simply crossing a card-spend target.

  • The Fee Stays While Rewards Narrow: HSBC Taj Credit Card Membership fee is ₹1.1 lakh per annum. Thus, the membership fee has no exit on spend, and some of the spend is even hard to come by to cover it. Reward points are not earned for fuel, utilities, insurance, government payments, education, and foreign-currency transactions.

HSBC Has More Filters Than You'd Expect

HSBC has clear age and income benchmarks for getting a credit card. Salaried applicants must be 18 to 65 years old. Self-employed applicants must be 25 to 65 years old. The usual annual income bracket for salaried individuals is ₹6 lakh. On the other hand, for self-employed applicants, it's ₹12 lakh.

Then location constraints can stop an HSBC credit card application before income becomes relevant. You must apply from an HSBC-listed service city or through an eligible nearby branch. During profile evaluation, your identity, address, PAN documents, and proof of income will be cross-checked. Further, your credit score is a major factor in determining whether you are eligible for a credit card.

Not All Points Are Created Equal at HSBC Bank

HSBC Reward Points can be worth ₹0.25 to ₹1 each. The final value depends on your card and redemption choice. So, redemptions currently happen through the HSBC India Mobile Banking app. The table below shows why HSBC Reward Points can have different values at redemption.

Once you redeem or transfer rewards, you can't cancel them. This changes how you compare a rewards credit card against a cashback card. Your HSBC credit card rewards value depends on your redemption capacity, not just your earning capacity.
